Futon Covers Increase Futon Mattress Lifespan
Humans have a tendency to justify putting of things that don’t seem to be causing immediate damage. Quitting smoking, not using sunscreen, and fixing that leaking tap are all examples of commonly procrastinated tasks. Flipping our mattresses is also part of that list, and if you are using a futon mattress, ignoring the use of a futon cover is more damaging than you might imagine.
Many futon mattresses are built up of a cotton/foam composition, which as you can imagine is relatively absorptive. The primary reason for futon mattress damage is from liquids. You may think that you are quite careful and don’t tend to spill on the futon, but there are many other things that can happen which are not always controllable. Being sick is a prime example as sweat and vomit can easily end up on the bed. Since futon mattresses have little air voids within the core, there is a tendency for those liquids to become moldy and/or mildew rapidly. This is why futon covers are considered required.
Mold and mildew are not the sole problem with moisture build up however. While mold and mildew are grounds for immediate discard, incremental amounts of moisture buildup will also cause the inner core of the mattress to compact and sag. In either the case of mildew, mold, or mattress compaction there is little that can be done to revive the mattress back to life. In addition to a futon cover to protect the mattress from moisture, other strategies can be used to properly sustain the life of the mattress. However, these will not be reviewed in this article but can be found on the attached website.
Futon mattresses are generally easy to maintain if done on a regular basis. The entire system is a great bang for your buck, but should include a futon cover which will cost an additional $30-$90. Some futon mattresses will come with a cover, but you should ensure that the cover is adequate for the job. For example, you want to ensure that the cover will avoid spills instead of just sweat. You also want to make sure that it wouldn’t feel like you are sleeping on a garbage bag.
Futon covers also have the added benefit of adding color and patterns to your decor. If you are using the futon as a sofa, then this can be great for blending the futon furniture into the room. If you are solely using the futon mattress as a bed, then decorative colors and designs will not be necessary and you should be able to save a few dollars in the process.
Remember, keep your skin safe with sunscreen and a futon cover for you mattress!
